Sunflower Republican Club Christmas Dinner

In spite of snow, bad roads and cold temperatures the Sunflower Republican Club members turned out in force for the annual Christmas Dinner. Included among the guests were the newly elected officers of the Johnson County Republican Party: Ronnie Metsker, Chairman, Cathy Nugent, Vice-Chairwoman and Marearl Denning, Secretary. Both Ronnie and Marearl gave brief remarks. Candidates for the Chairmanship of the 3rd District Republican Party, John Rubin and Keith Esau, both gave remarks, as well.

Ken Gott, Chief, Research and Publications Team, Combat Studies Institute at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas was the main speaker. Ken spoke about military life. The common thread over the years is the difficulty of being away from family while deployed. Communications have improved with cell phones and the Internet has helped families keep in touch with loved ones. Months away from home are still difficult for the service members and their families. Living conditions for members of deployed service members has also improved. Living quarters “behind the wire” with showers have replaced tents. Chow halls that serve a variety of good food are a welcome improvement. Although living conditions are better in Iraq and in Afghanistan, the danger is always present. Ken emphasized that the combatants held at Guantanamo Bay should not be brought to Fort Leavenworth. The top security military prison that was over one hundred years old has been demolished. The newly built military prison is not capable of securing high value prisoners. It is rated as a medium security prison. Ken cautions friends who watch war movies or the History Channel with him. As historian, will hear a stream of criticism. Ken is completing a book that should be out sometime in 2009.

Linda Ferguson sent her regrets, as she was unable to attend at the last minute. Doris Riley read her prepared remarks about Operation Uplink. The donations would bring service members and their families together by providing free phone cards and time on the Internet at Internet cafés. While we celebrate Christmas with our families, many military families will have an empty place at the table and around the tree.
